Spray foam insulation is significantly less permeable to air and water infiltration than other insulation options. By some estimates, it can provide up to 24 times more protection. Once applied, the spray foam expands up to 60 times its liquid volume, which allows it to penetrate into every nook, cranny and crevice to create a solid layer of thermal protection. It is also long-lasting, with many spray foam options designed to provide a reliable thermal barrier for up to 80 years.
Spray foam requires a chemical reaction between two chemicals that are mixed and sprayed directly into the walls, attic spaces and crawl spaces of your home. Once applied, the foam expands to seal the structure. It takes approximately an hour for the foam to become tacky to the touch, and up to 24 hours to fully cure.
Spray foam insulation, commonly made of polyurethane, is applied wet and expands into a thick foam that fits snugly in wall cavities, crevices and gaps—therefore, it can be installed in hard-to-reach areas and around piping and wiring.
Spray foam is also extremely energy-efficient. It fits perfectly in wall cavities, small crevices, tiny gaps, etc. and can act as an air sealing solution. Spray foam insulation can also help:
Spray foam is available in two forms. Open-cell spray foam insulation has tiny cells that are not completely closed and are less dense and filled with air. This gives the insulation a spongy texture and a lower R-value (although it can achieve a greater R-value if not restricted by space).
Low-density, open-cell polyurethane foams are similar to conventional polyurethane foams but are more flexible. Closed-cell spray foam is much denser. It has a smaller, more compact cell structure and has a higher R-value per inch. It’s also ideal for achieving a high R-value in narrower spaces.
The Metro Home Insulation team uses spray foam insulation for new construction projects in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas. We have experience with both commercial and residential jobs and can install spray foam in walls, attics, basements and crawl spaces.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sprayed foam (and foamed-in-place) insulation is ideal for:
According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost of spray foam insulation in Minneapolis, based on more than 30 cost profiles, is $1,656. Open-cell foam is usually $0.44 to $0.65 per board foot, and closed-cell foam is about $0.70 to $1 per board foot. Spray foam insulation R-value and the amount of material you need will also affect the overall price.
These are just averages and may necessarily be accurate for your project, but our spray insulation contractors can give you a free estimate after discussing some specifics.
One of the primary benefits of spray foam insulation is the energy efficiency it delivers. It offers significant R-value that can keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, no matter what the temperature is outside the home. This has the added benefit of reducing the amount of work your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump has to do to keep you comfortable. This means your HVAC units require less energy to keep you comfortable, and it reduces wear and tear on these systems, which extends their operational life span.

Choosing the Right Spray Foam Insulation
Spray foam insulation is made of two components. The first is an isocyanate, and the second is a polyol. When combined, these two chemicals react with one another to create an impenetrable thermal barrier.
Not even close. Spray foam insulation has been around for over 70 years, and over that time, significant improvements to the chemical composition of the product have enhanced the effectiveness of spray foam insulation.
